Online Instruction Blog #5- April Benton

Formative  Formative is an assessment/ assignment tool that can be used on Chromebooks, cellphones, tablets, etc. It allows you to use questions from a bank that are already created or create your own. It will enable the user to upload items that are already created from pdf, docs, or other documents. Also, you can attach standards to the questions. It allows the user to set an answer key that provides auto-grading, and questions can be asked in random order to prevent cheating. The students' responses updates in real-time, allowing the teacher to see the student's responses live. The teacher can give the students feedback with emojis, video, etc. which enables it to be more personal. Students can send the teacher messages also, which allows for two-way communication between the student and the teacher. Formative can be integrated into programs that many schools already use, like Google Classroom, Clever, Google, and Classlink. Formative is a tool that allows the teach...

Tools to use in Online Instruction Tool 1: FlipGrid Introduction: FlipGrid is a free online tool that allows teachers and students to make short videos on a topic in "Grids". A "Grid" is a collection of videos on a topic that a teacher assigns. Students create short, 1 minute long (or shorter) videos on the topic. For example, a teacher can assign a question such as "How would you solve this problem:" and students create videos showing how to solve the item. Support Effective Teaching/Learning: FlipGrid supports online teaching by allowing teachers to check up on students and make sure that students are understanding concepts. It also allows students to express themselves in verbal fashion rather than a written fashion. It fosters collaboration and discussion by allowing students to see each other's responses. In the math and science realms, teachers can pose questions or ask students how they reasoned through a problem or have students sh...

Tool #1: Zoom Zoom is an online video conferencing program. How it supports effective teaching and/or learning:  Teachers could use Zoom and have students "meet" them there at a certain time and deliver instruction online. Teachers could also use Zoom for an extra support resource, for example if a student is struggling with a concept at home, they can request a meeting with the teacher via Zoom to help clarify confusion. Tool #2: Edupuzzle Edpuzzle is a site where videos can be created to deliver instruction. These videos can also have stopping points where students are asked to answer a specific question and cannot move forward until answered. This will help ensure students are actually paying attention to the video. The site also include some videos that can be used that were made by others. How it supports effective teaching and/or learning: This site can allow teachers to teach virtually without it having to be "live" like zoom. Students could watch...

Brilliant “We’re here to stroke your curiosity and inspire you with the beauty of math, science, and computer science” On the site students and anyone really can build their problem solving skills through completely challenging explorations. One thing my math team and I have been talking about is how to get students to think and problem solve. There is a free version but after that the yearly cost is $149.85 a year.  I did not see anywhere where it was saying free for teachers right now. I created an account and started one of the logic courses. They pose questions and you have to solve them. In each question there is a show explanation tab. This could be helpful when students get stuck. However I do worry they would just click it and not try the problem. One nice thing about the explanations is that it gives it in steps, so students could just look at the first step to get them started. Two things I found were a section on learning visual proofs of algebraic ide...
