Professional Development

I originally had planned to create a flipped classroom PD in a hybrid style, with parts of the PD being online/asynchronous & parts of the PD being in-person discussions/workshops. However, with the pandemic & the sudden change to focusing on remote learning, there was no way that teachers or the administration would be willing for me to do such a PD. Most of the teachers were focused on getting stuff to their students/adjusting to the new paradigm of working from home, and I was swamped as a tech facilitator with making sure that students had devices and internet connections in order to do work. Instead of doing a PD on a flipped classroom, I instead moved my PD to a more generalized plan of supporting teachers based on their individual classroom needs and activities. For example, I assisted the atheletic trainers with the basics of Canvas & helped them with transitioning what would be activities directly observed by the coaches to activities that students could submit online for the coaches to keep track of. Another way that I supported teachers was offer training and support for transitioning over to Canvas, which was something that my admin wanted for consistency & the ability to track grades and make sure that teachers adhered to district policies. With this, I created documentation, videos, and step-by-step guides to assist teachers with an unknown technology product.

The learning materials in this course helped me think of how to best reach my staff and teachers. For example, using the TPACK paradigm, I could identify the lacking portions of the TPACK framework and help teachers achieve the needed portions in order to fully realize using technology in their virtual classroom to keep track of student achievement. Another way that I used the materials in the course was to also find a way to present this unique PD. In this case, I used a pre-survey to gauge expected needs of the staff and then created documentation and lessons/tutorials to meet those needs, then met with teachers one-on-one for particular needs in their situation.

I loved the way that you transitioned your professional development to meet the needs of your teachers during this time of need. We also had many teachers need to learn the basics about Canvas. I am hoping that this situation will encourage all our teachers to use a LMS in the future. I also like that you did a needs survey. That is a step that I left out when I suddenly moved everything online.

I think it is great how you changed your PD to meet the needs of your teachers. I lucked out that my PD was already focused on teaching various tools such as Flipgrd, EdPuzzle, Adobe Spark, and Quizizz. All the teachers taking my PD were able to use these tools right away in our current situation. Overall, the one my teachers loved the most was Flipgrid. Since it is the students leaving videos. It is nice to see their faces!
As a teacher, I appreciate that you asked your teachers what they needed in this current situation and went from there!
