PD Implementation- Leas

What did you do and learn from your PD activities? How did you utilize the learning materials from this course to support your PD development and delivery?

I originally planned on doing a five week course where each week we would learn about a new website or tool that we could then use in our classrooms right away. I had talked to some of the teachers in my school and asked them what they wanted to learn in terms of technology integration and they all said new tools. I had set up our professional development as a course in Canvas which is the platform we use with our kids. A few teachers wanted to see and use it as a student.
I spoke with my instructional coach and she was able to help me work it out so everyone who participated could one 1 Digital CEU! The plan was to meet every Thursday from 8-9 where I would introduce the tool and we would work through some activities together. Then the teachers would have various assignments to complete that week and use the tool in their classroom.
When we went to virtual learning, I discussed with my principal and instructional coach and we decided that i would simply off the PD virtual since I already had the Canvas course set up. I took from this course what Dr. Liao does with us each week. I recored videos on Screencast-o-matic with the pieces I would have done if we were face to face. For example, the first week our tool was Adobe Spark. I recorded an introduction to the website video, a video on how to make a flyer and another on how to make a video in Adobe Spark. The teachers then had to make a flyer for their classroom, a video about themselves, and then participate in a discussion board on how they would use Adobe Spark in their classroom. I knew from this course that teachers need hands on practice before having the students use the tool and I planned their "assignments" with that in mind. I also tried to plan for them to do things they could also use in their class. The other tools we explored were EdPuzzle, Flipgrid, and Quizizz. The fifth week I was going to do a tutorial on our SmartTVs we have in our classrooms. Since that was not practical right now I changed that week. I taught the teacher how I make Digital Escape Rooms using Google Drawings and Google Forms.
When I structured the course in Canvas knowing I would not be there to explain the parts, I thought about this course was set up and tried to mimic that. I also set up a Hallway Q and A and Zoom office hours so that teachers could get help if needed.
I have learned that teachers are excited to learn new things and they are willing to try them with their classes. All the teachers in my PD, there are 10 of them, have already used Adobe Spark, EdPuzzle, and Flipgrid in their rooms. This week we are doing Quizizz and I just opened it yesterday. They all want more time to work on their Escape Rooms, they are time consuming to set up. I knew that so we did that the week we had Spring Break so they had two week to work on it.
I have also learned that I enjoy teaching my peers what I know. It has been fun and challenging to put this PD together but I am loving that they are enjoying it and are able to use what we are doing. I know sometimes we sit through a PD then walk away and never use what we learned for a variety of reasons. I do think that right now teachers are looking for new technologies to engage our students in this virtual learning. The ones I used are great to do just that!

Love it! I'm really glad that you were able to teach your teachers what you know and apply what you learned in your PD. I hope you will keep yourself up to date with different professional learning opportunities.
